Chosen from entries submitted throughout Alaska including PR firms, advertising agencies, and non-profits, Leona's work at the College of Rural and Community Development has been honored with five awards from the Public Relations Society of America Alaska chapter during the three years she has worked at the university. She is one of only a few people who have won as an individual and not part of a public relations team.

In 2015, she earned a first place Award of Excellence Award for her writing portfolio. She earned a second place Aurora Award in Community Relations for her outreach campaign recruiting rural students for the UAF Wildland Fire Crew. She place third in Public Affairs for her volunteer campaign for Alaska Native leader PJ Simon and the Allakaket Tribe that highlighted the generosity of the Alaska Native subsistence way of life. Check out the Advocacy page for more about that campaign.

In 2013, her first rural Alaska outreach campaign placed second in Community Relations for her strategic communications project that recruited ten Galena Interior Learning Academy students for the Interior-Aleutians Campus's wildland firefighting red card class. She earned Honorable Mention in Events and Observances 7 or Fewer Days for the fundraising garage sale that earned more than $5,000 for 2013 Yukon River flood relief.
